Leech therapy: a proven method for humans and animals.
Leech therapy is a traditional and well-known treatment method, successfully used not only in human medicine but also in animal care. Many pet owners value this natural method to help their four-legged friends with a variety of problems.
This is how leech treatment works
During the sucking process, the medicinal leech releases valuable substances from its saliva into the wound. This saliva contains up to 100 medicinally active substances, which have, among other things, the following effects:
* Anticoagulants: improve blood flow.
* Painkillers: help with acute and chronic pain.
* Anti-inflammatories: Reduce swelling and inflammation.
* Blood flow promoters and vasodilators: support tissue regeneration.
* Antibiotics: can prevent infections.
Areas of application in animals
Leech therapy can be used for a wide range of musculoskeletal problems and other ailments. Common areas of application include:
* Diseases of the musculoskeletal system: osteoarthritis, arthritis, hip/elbow dysplasia, tendon injuries, herniated discs, laminitis and inflammation of the joint capsule.
* Additional problems: abscesses, eczema and hematomas (bruises).
Course and duration of treatment
A treatment usually lasts 60 to 90 minutes. At the beginning of the treatment, the leech is gently placed on the affected area, where it attaches. It then releases its active ingredients into the surrounding tissue. Once the treatment is over, the leech falls off on its own.
An important part of the treatment is the continued bleeding, which can occur for several hours after the treatment. This bleeding is desirable and should not be stopped, as it supports the cleansing and decongestant action provided by the treatment.
Leech therapy should not be used in the following cases:
* Anemia (blood deficiency)
* Arterial occlusive diseases
* Blood clotting disorders
* Treatment with blood thinners (such as Marcomar, heparin)
* Severe immunodeficiency
* Severe immunodeficiency or cancer
Please note that before any treatment, a thorough examination must be performed by a qualified therapist.
